La Tigra

While my amor walks up to the supermarket to buy us some chicken to cook for dinner, I thought I would post about our hiking trip that we went on two weekends ago. Brad and I had decided that it was time to get out of the city, so we decided to take a bus to La Tigra, the national cloud forest just outside the city.

We woke up at 5 to head down to the bus station, in a somewhat shady part of town. The bus we took was actually a school bus....and if you imagine the midnight bus from the Harry Potter movies you will have some idea of what we experienced. We were FLYING down sort of washed out dirt roads, and to make things extra fun we were also ascending a mountain. The stop for La Tigra was the last on the bus route, and it dropped us off pretty much in the middle of nowhere. The roads at that point had become so curvy that the bus couldn't continue. We were left with a 2 Km hike to the park entrance, which actually turned out to be one of the most beautiful parts of the hike.

I felt sort of like Che from Motorcycle Diaries. It was early in the morning and the sun was coming up over the mountains. The air was cool and we were walking through all of these little pueblos. We had lots of curious campesinos popping their heads out of their houses to say hi. Although it was beautiful, it was also one of the most difficult parts of the hike since we were climbing all uphill, and after a while we hitched a ride in the back of a friendly woman's pickup truck.

The pictures did not turn out very well, but I guess it is hard to do justice to the beauty of the rainforest with photos anyway. (Brad takes over here because Megan is cooking) All in all we walked about 10 miles up to the park, through the park itself, and then down through a few more villages, and then up another hill before we reached the road to catch our bus back to Tegucigalpa. Megan had a few blisters to show for our efforts, and my legs didn't function quite the same for about the next 2 days...but it was a great adventure!
