The Good News: The gas strike is now over and the price of gas has been fixed until the end of the year at approximately 66 lempiras for regular (roughly $3.25 U.S. - still expensive, right?).

The Bad News: Even though Megan and I and the students got 2 days off this week due to the strike, we're that much further behind in covering material for our classes!

It's really amazing to me that the people here were already paying $3.25/gallon for regular gasoline even before the strike. I mean, this is the 2nd poorest country in North America, and they're paying more for gasoline than most of us are in the states. So when prices were raised to 80 lempiras/gallon (or $4.10 in U.S.), you can see why the taxi drivers went on strike.

At least in America, most people have the extra income to absorb some of the added cost of fuel. So even though it was surreal that cab drivers could instantaneously interrupt everyones lives, it's not hard for me to imagine something similar happening in the U.S. when prices reach the $4.00 mark. If they're that high when Megan and I get back, we'll be investing in a tandem bicycle.
